Where the data comes from

Data updated 18 Oct 2026

Licence and facility data come from the public lists of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (including DATA.GOV.HK open data) and the Private Columbaria Licensing Board, checked daily; every page shows its source and date. Prices come from organisations' own websites and are always labelled “not verified”. This is not a government website; for licence status, the Licensing Board's register is authoritative.

常見問題Questions families ask

Answers follow the official pages, checked on 17 Oct 2026.

What is the difference between a licence and an exemption for a private columbarium?

Both are “specified instruments” under the Private Columbaria Ordinance (Cap. 630). A licensed columbarium may sell or newly let niches, subject to its licence conditions, such as a 14-day cooling-off period in the sale agreement. A columbarium with an exemption may operate lawfully but may not sell interment rights (s.10). A columbarium holding a temporary suspension of liability may not sell niches either.

Does “approved in principle” mean a columbarium is licensed?

No. On the Licensing Board's application list, approval-in-principle means the applicant still has requirements to meet and no licence, exemption or temporary suspension of liability has been issued; niches may not be sold until one is. Before buying, check the name, address, instrument number and validity on the Board's register.

How are public niches allocated?

Public niches are run by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD). Extendable niches at Wo Hop Shek Phase VI, Cape Collinson-San Ha, Shek Mun and Tsang Tsui columbaria are allocated in rounds announced by FEHD; new niches at Cheung Chau, Lai Chi Yuen, Lamma and Peng Chau are only for eligible Islands District residents. FEHD publishes the number of new niches each columbarium can allocate every day. A standard niche costs HK$2,400 for the first 20-year interment period (FEHD fee table, checked 18 Oct 2026).

What are the green burial options, and do they cost anything?

Scattering ashes in an FEHD garden of remembrance is free; apply at least 14 days ahead, as the holder of the Permit to Take Away Cremated Ashes or with their written authorisation. With FEHD approval, ashes can also be scattered in three designated areas of Hong Kong waters; apply at least 10 days ahead, and FEHD charges no processing fee. You can record your own wish for scattering in the Green Burial Central Register.
